What is a Certification?

A certification is a formal procedure by which an accredited or authorized person or agency assesses and verifies (and attests in writing by issuing a certificate) the attributes, characteristics, quality, qualification, or status of individuals or organizations, goods or services, procedures or processes, or events or situations, in accordance with established requirements or standards (as defined by the Business Dictionary.com). In this case, PMI is the agency, who’s formal procedure is defined for each certification option listed below. The most popular Certification is the PMP, Project Management Professional. All certifications have some form of prerequisite before you can write the exam, be it experience, and/or training. You may find your field is more focused, such as the PMI-SP which looks into scheduling and planning skills, or more ‘agile’ in which Agile may be perfect for you.
