FAQs - Volunteering

Do I have to be a PMI or PMI South Chapter Member to be able to volunteer?

No!  Different types of volunteering opportunities are available to both members and non-members.  We celebrate the diversity of our volunteering teams, and welcome all who have a passion and desire to contribute to the project environment and our communities.  Explore the various opportunities on our Get Involved page.

I would like to volunteer, but I'm not sure if I have the time?

The amount of time you would like to contribute to volunteering activties, is wholly up to you!  Carefully consider how much time you would like to allocate to volunteering.  A more formal role in the chapter may require a few hours a month; a committee or project may require volunteer work a few times a year; and a once-off project or event may be best suited to a more fluid and ad-hoc commitment.

How do I know if my skill-set matches the requirement of the chapter?

A more appropriate question would be to determine what skills you would like to gain from the chapter!  We collaborate and work with persons of all skill-sets and ability levels, whilst appreciating that we all have something to learn from each other.  Whether you are wholly proficient at a task, or would like to use volunteering as an opportunity to develop a certain skill - we are here to support you.

FAQs - Certifications and Registrations

Can my PMI Certification be verified?

A person's PMI certification status can usually be verified through the online Certification Registry, here

Since certification holders may choose not to be listed in the online Certification Registry, they may hold a PMI certification even if their names do not appear within the listing. Therefore, if you are unable to locate an individual’s name and credential(s) in the registry, you may request their credentials from the Project Management Institute, with the relevant signed authorization documentation.

I paid for my certification renewal, did my membership renew as well?

No. There are separate fees and separate processes to renew your membership or your certification. Membership is on a one-year cycle and your certification renewal is on a three-year cycle. Feel free to contact us at coordinator@pmi.org.za if you need further assistance.

How do I learn more about the various PMI Certifications available?

PMI offers a comprehensive certification program for project practitioners of all education and skill levels. For a list of all available certifications and choosing the right one for you, refer to Certification

I’m interested in preparing to sit for my PMP exam. Are there any preparation courses to help pass my exam?

We have partered with a number of Approved Training Partners (ATPs) who are able to assist with relevant preparatory training and coaching to help you prepare for your exams.  If you need help in identifying a suitable ATP, feel free to get in touch here:  vpatpoutreach@pmi.org.za

I have a Masters Degree in Project Management from a South African University. Am I automatically PMP certified due to my degree, or do I need to go through the application process to be certified?

Unfortunately there is no automatic route to becoming PMP certified. Due to the nature of the certification, both working experience and formal contact hours are required.  Your degree may cover you for a number of contact hours, but it is still necessary to prepare for, and take, the PMP Certification exam.

Please refer to the requirements for the PMP certification on Page 8 of the PMP handbook, which can be accessed here.

Do I have to be a member to apply for a PMI certification?

No! PMI membership is separate from PMI certifications. However, as a PMI member, you will have access to many benefits including discounts on your certification exam fee as well as discounts on professional development opportunities to help with the maintenance of your certification(s). Join here.
